The Department
of Thoracic Surgery is part of the Department of Cardiothoracic
Surgery.
The Department
deals with the full spectrum of benign and malignant pathology
of the Thorax, including surgery of the upper Gastrointestinal
tract. The majority of patients are admitted in Ward 16 and
those requiring Intensive Care Treatment are mainly accommodated
in
Wards 5 and 7. Ward 16 is the thoracic surgical ward located in the Jubilee Wing at the Leeds
General Infirmary.
When this new wing was built and completed
in 1997, it was decided that Thoracic patients had differing
needs to cardiac patients, so the opportunity was made to open
a separate Thoracic ward within the building, along with two
cardiac wards.
Ward 16 opened in January 1998 originally
with just 8 of its current 22 beds since the service was initially
provided by a locum Consultant. However, a full time consultant
Thoracic surgeon was appointed in October 1998 ( Mr.Andrew Thorpe
) followed by a second appointment ( Mr.Kostas Papagiannopoulos
) in June 2001.
Ward 16 has now 18 thoracic beds with two
high dependency beds. Operations are carried out every weekday
and have a substantial turn over of patients. We receive patients
from all over the region and anticipate the workload to increase
in the succeeding years. The estimated number of minor and major
procedures will be 850-1000.
